Summary
Viewpoint, now with Trimble, was a 50+ year old business with a robust user base in the construction project management arena. The yearly conference included nearly 2000 user participants descending on the Oregon Convention Center for 3 days of education, networking + product reveals.
The UX team tapped into this opportunity to build out a mature research arm that included a 50’ x 50’ research booth complete with recording units, automated sign- in + a general air of intentional, user centered work (the team on the research side wore lab coats to communicate our research focus).
I worked with my fellow lead to both build out the Design Ops side of the project (invitations, compensation, etc) as well as conduct in-booth research for my specific projects.
2000
Users participating in the 3 day conference from across the US, Australia + Europe.
130+
Moderated user studies conducted over 3 days.

Design Ops
Design Ops is a passion of mine and it worked here flawlessly as myself and co-lead set up systems for communicating with users, online registration complete with screener and even an automated thank you system (thanks Zapier). Once at the centrally located booth, users were prompted to check in and relax while various team members conducted a variety of studies. Post study, they were provided a digital thank you complete with a gift + opportunity to join our research pool again at a later date.

Research Studies
My personal studies depended on the projects I was leading at the time. These varied from moderated usability studies to analog prototypes to design exercises such as Build Your Own (pictured at bottom). Each of these moved with the intent of gathering data points to support or refute hypotheses myself + team held.
An additional benefit of this work is the team engagement that we experienced - from having QA team collaborators to Engineering + Stakeholders viewing the studies live from the booth waiting area.

Outcome
The resulting work was a huge win for the UX team providing not only great exposure to users (we wore lab coats around the convention center) but also across the entire org as we evangelized our results. Insights gathered from the studies enabled countless projects to both validate and invalidate hypotheses and move forward with projects in the most effective manner possible.
On the business side, stakeholders appreciated the work conducted in derisking projects while simultaneously improving customer outreach.
